Just a few thoughts on the Madrid game. ( I promise to get a halfway decent CSS/HTML template up within a week.)
1) Raul’s Refined Touch - I keep trying to find a reason to hate Raul, yet he continues to impress. His turn and finish to open the Madrid scoring was impressive. In the 25th minute, he lurked at the far post and clinically finished. While we all miss the young swashbuckling Raul who ran at defenders with abandon, the 30+ player is still earning his paycheck.
2) Good night Guti – Guti had a few nice chipped passes, but when the game called for organization and marking, blondie went missing time and time again. Both Granjero and Alonso appear much stronger options to pair with Diarra in centermid.
3) The Blossoming Benzema - the young Frenchman is obsessed with square balls and passing in tight space, yet his touch, vision, and composure cannot be denied. He assisted Ronaldo in the 18th minute, and scored on a tap-in in the 65th minute. Not a bad haul for the youngster.
4) The Bleeding Backline – Raul Albiol looked competent and event assisted Raul’s header. Pepe, as per usual, produced 90% brilliance and 10% pathetic mediocrity. He was largely to blame for Toronto’s sole goal and, of course, fell to the field in injury immediately afterward. Blah.
5) The Old Guard – Drenthe looks awful at leftback, Huntelaar is in Italy, and Schneider still looks shaken from lingering knee problems. Only Robben has staked a claim to his starting spot – his finish in the 86th minute was and neat and tidy as Grandma’s house.
